Why your lower back hurts (and what you can do today)

Low back pain rarely comes from the back. Here is where it actually originates and three things you can start this week.

If your lower back hurts at the end of the day, the first thing to understand is that the pain is almost never where the problem is.

The real origin is usually threefold: a hip that lost mobility, an abdomen that stopped supporting, and lumbar muscles that have been compensating for both for months. When those muscles run out, pain appears. That is why massaging only the area helps for a few days but does not solve it.

Three things you can start this week:

1. Get up every forty-five minutes. You do not need to walk: standing, pushing your hip forward and sitting back down already changes the pressure on your discs.

2. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. It aligns the pelvis and unloads the lumbar area during the eight hours you treat it worst.

3. Apply heat, not cold. Unless there is an acute injury less than forty-eight hours old, heat relaxes contracted muscle; cold hardens it further.

Where therapy comes in. The deep heat of the jade thermal bed does exactly what the body needs: it relaxes the paraspinal muscles without abrupt manipulation while the rolling restores mobility vertebra by vertebra. Combined with deep tissue work to release trigger points, it is the protocol that gives us the best results in posture-related low back pain.

If the pain has lasted more than three months, travels down your leg or wakes you at night, see your doctor first. Some conditions need a diagnosis before a massage table.

The best time to start was a year ago. The second best is today.
